Proper golf swing - free tips to swing better

So, what is a proper golf swing? There are many successful golfers out there with some very strange swings. I can think of one or two proffesional golfers with swing planes that you really don't want to imitate. The reason that these golfers are still successful (even with their odd swings), is because they somehow manage to get the clubface square at the impact point with the ball and stike it pure time and again.
What I will share on this page, is the proper movement of the shoulders, arms and club during the golf swing. If ten different golfers studied this theory, they would all end up with a slightly different swing, because we all have different body shapes and natural rhythms.
See below some tips on the proper movement of the shoulders and the proper movement of the arms and golf club. I will not discuss the correct address position and posture in this section, but if you would like to find out more about this, please visit the golf stance tips page.
Also visit the golf swing mechanics section for additional tips on the proper golf swing.
The role of my trunk, is to turn and move my club backward and forward, with my arms moving the club up and down along the target line.
Try the drill below to really feel the correct movement of the shoulders in the golf swing.

1. Take your normal stance and hold your arms across your chest with each hand gripping an elbow (see picture above).
2. Turn your shoulders 90 degrees away from the target line, so your back is square to the target.
3. Turn your shoulders back to zero degrees (starting position) to the target line, with your trail (right) shoulder turning down towards the ball.
4. Turn forward 90 degrees (follow-through position) to the target line with your trail (right) shoulder now finishing closest to the target. As I mentioned before, the role of my arms is to move the club up and down along the target line.
1. It is important to make sure that my hands and arms lead (followed by my trunk) throughout my golf swing.
2. As my shoulders turn away from the target line, my right arm and wrist will fold vertically up until the top of my backswing (my left arm remains straight).
At the top of my backswing my hands should be in front of my chest, between my shoulders.

3. As my shoulders reaches impact with the ball my right arm and wrist will straighten up through impact.
4. As my shoulders turn through to the finish position, my left wrist and arm will hinge up and over my left shoulder while keeping my right arm straight (my right arm only folds at the very end of my follow-through as the club rests across my right shoulder).
