In this 'improve golf putting' section, I will share some excellent tips to help you putt with more confidence.
Before I could really improve my putting, I had to understand the basics of what makes a good putter.
I will start this section by focussing on the two main factors in putting and then share some other really important putting fundamentals.
The backward and forward swinging of the putter determines the distance that the ball will travel. The longer the backswing and forward swing, the further the ball will travel. I like to keep my backswing and forward swing the same length as this helps me putt with more consistency.
During putting practice, I use a nice drill to develop a stroke where my backswing and forward swing are equal lengths.
1. I place 2 tees about 6 feet apart and position my ball in the center.
2. I then practice by swinging the putterhead back and forth between these two tees (I stop my backswing when the putterhead reaches the back tee and stop my forward swing when the putterhead reaches the front tee).
3. When I am satisfied with my progress, I increase the distance between the tees and repeat the drill.
The way the putter face is pointing at impact with the golf ball will determine the direction of the ball.
It is also crucial to read the line of the putt carefully in order to determine which way and by how much the putt will 'break' on the way to the hole.
1. Once I am happy that I have read the line of the putt, I pick a spot (a mark on the green for example) on my target line 3-4 feet ahead of the ball.
2. I then align my putter head behind the ball to this target spot before starting my stroke.
The above technique is especially helpful on longer-range putts as it makes it much easier to focus on a spot 3-4 feet away, than trying to line up with the hole which could be 20 feet away.
1. With a balanced stance, I push my hips back with my arms hanging naturally.
2. I focus on maintaining a softness in my arms, hands (light grip pressure) and legs.
3. My ball is just forward (closer to my left foot) of the centre of my stance (stand a touch closer to the ball if you are using a centre shafted putter).
4. My eyes should be directly over the ball at address as this will ensure solid contact.
5. My hands lead the way in the stroke as I accelerate through ball.
6. For consistent putting, I keep acceleration the same for all putts, but vary my stroke length as required.
7. I must remember that the ball will 'break' more as its speed decreases.
